9 Hair Care Tips To Protect Your Locks From The Summer Heat

Summer means flowy cotton clothes, beach vacations, and pool time. But the season also means sweaty scalps, frizzy, and flat hair that, even after shampooing, starts looking dull and lifeless by the next day.

And if you’ve spent time (and money) on hair color, smoothening, or keratin treatments, the summer heat can undo it all in no time.

But don’t worry. You don’t have to give up on good hair days till September.

Sure, using traditional remedies like Amla, Reetha, and  Shikakai Powder helps tame your hair a lot during this season. But in today’s blog, we’re not just giving you DIY remedies, we’re also sharing some practical, simple, and everyday tips that can actually protect your hair from summer damage.

1. Cover Up With a Hat or Scarf

You might enjoy walking around in the sun, but your hair definitely doesn’t. Direct sunlight makes your hair dry, takes away its natural shine, and if your hair is coloured, it starts fading even faster. Heat weakens your hair strands, which causes breakage. That’s why the easiest solution is to cover your hair whenever stepping out.

A simple cotton scarf or wide-brimmed hat not only adds style but also protects your hair from UV rays and pollution. On top of that, sweat doesn’t reach your scalp as easily, which helps control frizz and greasiness to a large extent.

What to choose:

  • Wear wide-brimmed cotton or straw hats that are breathable.
  • For beach days or outings, tie a light scarf tightly over your head.

2. Switch to a Gentle, Moisturising Shampoo

In summer, your scalp is already overworking with sweat, dust, heat, and oil piling up. Now, you’re using a harsh, chemical-heavy shampoo to remove all that, you are also washing away your scalp’s natural moisture, resulting in dryness, frizziness, and hair thinning.

Instead, go for something gentle and hydrating. Look for shampoos that say sulfate-free, moisturising, or hydrating on the label. Ingredients like aloe vera, coconut milk, or glycerin are your hair’s BFFs this season. They clean without leaving your strands dry and straw-like.

Here are some recommendations:

Krishna’s Aloe Vera Shampoo– Has Aloe vera extract as its key ingredient, which helps keep your scalp cool, reduces inflammation, and hydrates the hair follicles.

Krishna’s Kesharogyam Triphala Shampoo– Contains Triphala (Amla, Haritaki, Bibhitaki). These are natural ingredients that reduce dandruff and strengthen the roots.

3. Give Your Heat Styling Tools a Break

Summer heat already makes your hair feels dry and frizzy, and on top of that, if you go and blast it with a 200°C flat iron or curler every other day, just think about what your hair will go through.

Heat styling tools may give you a temporary style, but slowly steal your hair’s natural texture, strength, and shine.

Often it feels like, “I’m doing it just once,” but in summer, already dehydrated hair becomes even more brittle. Split ends, breakage, and dullness are direct results of this.

So let your waves be wavy. Let your curls curl. Tie it up in a messy bun, throw on a claw clip, or braid it and call it a day. And if you still want to do some hairstyling:

  • Use a heat protectant spray; don’t style without it.
  • Keep the temperature low to medium.
  • Do heat styling only 1–2 times a week.

Don’t burn out your hair just for one look. Give your hair a break. You’ll be surprised how much healthier and shinier it looks after a few weeks off the hot tools.

4. Treat Your Hair to a Deep Conditioning Session Once a Week

In summer, hair needs extra hydration. Because of the sun, pollution, and sweat, hair starts feeling dry, brittle, and damaged. If you have ever bleached or coloured your hair, this problem gets even worse. That’s why every week, your hair deserves a little extra love, a deep conditioning treatment.

You don’t need anything fancy. Use a good deep conditioner or even a natural mask, something with ingredients like honey, coconut oil, or avocado. Use it after shampooing, let it sit for 15-20 minutes, and then rinse off.

5. Don’t Over-shampoo

Yes, it’s hot. Yes, you’re sweating. And yes, your scalp feels greasy. But that doesn’t mean you should shampoo your hair every single day.

Overwashing strips away natural oils that your scalp actually needs to stay balanced. And when you remove them too often, your scalp goes into overdrive and produces even more oil.

Instead, wash your hair 2–3 times a week with a mild shampoo. If needed in between, just use dry shampoo or simply rinse with water; that’s enough!

6. Use Cooler Water to Wash Your Hair

Hot water feels nice, but it can dry out your hair by stripping away natural oils. This makes the scalp dry, increases frizz, and makes hair brittle. During summer, the scalp is already more active, so using mild or cool water is much better.

Shampoo with lukewarm water, and give a final rinse with cool water.

7. Rinse Your Hair Before and After a Swim

A super simple but yet another effective hair care tip to protect your locks from the summer heat is to rinse your hair with clean water before you get in pool or ocean. Wet hair is already saturated, so it absorbs less chlorine or salt.

Then, right after swimming, rinse your hair again with plain water to remove any chlorine/salt that may have stuck.

If you swim regularly, apply a light layer of leave-in conditioner or coconut oil beforehand. It acts as a natural barrier for your hair. You can also use a swimming cap if the exposure is too much.

8. Don’t Skip Hair Oiling

These days, we all focus on heat protectants, conditioners, and serums, but one thing that used to be the most powerful in our traditional routine is regular oiling. Especially during summers, when the scalp sweats and hair gets dry from frequent washing, hair oiling is the best way to provide deep nourishment.

Just warm a little hair oil of your choice in your palms and massage it gently into your scalp and along the lengths. Let it sit for 30 minutes to an hour before washing it off with a mild shampoo.

Regular oiling helps replenish lost moisture, adds shine, and even protects your hair from sun damage and breakage. Just avoid stepping out in the sun with oiled hair. It can literally “fry” your strands.

You can try:

Krishna’s Kesharogyam Hair Oil — It has natural herbs like  Brahmi, Amla, Jatamansi, Kapoor Kachri, Tulsi, White Chandan, etc that provide your hair natural shine, thickness, and reduce hairfall.

9. Stay Hydrated and Eat Hair-Friendly Foods

Just external care is not enough, if your body lacks water and nutrients, your hair will also start looking dull and weak. In the summer heat, it’s easy to get dehydrated, and when that happens, your scalp gets dry, your strands turn brittle, causing a lot of hair fall.

So the simplest thing you can do is to drink more water. Not just a glass here and there, make it a habit. Your hair needs that hydration just as much as your skin does.

And don’t forget food. Hair thrives on good fats, protein, and minerals. So, add nuts (like almonds, walnuts), seeds (flaxseed, chia), seasonal fruits, green veggies, and protein-rich foods to your diet.
