We’ve all been there at some point, the New Year comes, and we make a solid resolution: “This year, weight loss for sure!

For the first few days, it’s all strict diets, calorie counting, gym sessions, or early morning walks… then life happens. The diet slips, motivation fades, and sometimes the scale even shows a higher number instead of going down.

If you want this journey to be sustainable, supporting it with natural remedies like Krishna’s Fat Reducer Juice, simple Ayurvedic herbs, and spices that you likely already have in your kitchen is the best option.

Wondering how herbs and spices might help you lose weight?

Because certain herbs and spices can help control appetite, curb food cravings, support insulin and blood sugar levels, improve digestion, and balance hunger hormones, many people include them in their routine when they want to lose weight.

Weight Loss in Ayurveda

Ayurveda is one of the world’s oldest healthcare traditions that originated in India around 5,000 years ago. Throughout the centuries, millions of people all over the world have turned to this wellness system to treat health problems that are otherwise hard to get rid of, without any side effects.

The reason is that Ayurveda focuses on the cultivation of a balanced lifestyle with mindful nutrition and stress reduction.

It believes that weight gain is not just about overeating or lack of exercise; it’s a sign that your body is out of balance. This imbalance can occur due to poor digestion, slow metabolism, stress, hormonal changes, or simply unhealthy eating habits.

According to the Ayurvedic practitioners, every person has three types of energies (Doshas), each of which is associated with elements of nature.

  • Vata: The energy of movement. Connected to space + air. When Vata is balanced, the body is flexible, the mind is creative, and digestion stays light, but when imbalanced, issues like weak digestion, poor nutrient absorption, constipation, and bloating happen.
  • Pitta: The energy of metabolism and transformation. Associated with fire + water. When balanced, digestion is strong and the mind is sharp; when imbalanced, it can cause increased hunger, high sugar cravings, irritability, and acidity issues.
  • Kapha: The energy of structure, stability, and lubrication. Associated with earth + water elements. When balanced, it gives strength, calmness, and joint support; when imbalanced, it can lead to heaviness, slow metabolism, water retention, and weight gain.

Though every person has all three doshas, usually one or two are dominant, which form your Prakriti (natural constitution). Ayurveda says: tune your food, routine, and lifestyle to match your prakriti (or dosha tendencies). When balance holds, digestion stays strong and weight becomes naturally manageable, without constant struggle.

Balancing doshas is a whole different topic, and honestly, it’s so deep that we’ve written a separate guide on it: “Ayurveda for Modern Life: Balancing Your Doshas with Everyday Practices.” Definitely check it out if you want to align your lifestyle with the Ayurvedic way.

For now, let’s keep our focus on Ayurvedic herbs and spices for weight loss, which not only help in fat burning and boosting digestion, but also serve another important purpose, balancing imbalanced doshas.

1. Triphala

If there’s one Ayurvedic remedy that tops every wellness list, it’s Triphala. The name itself gives a clue: Tri = three, phala = fruits. It’s a popular Ayurvedic concoction of three superfruits, Amalaki (Amla), Haritaki, and Bibhitaki.

  • Amlaki, also known as Amla or Indian gooseberry, is a powerful antioxidant that lowers inflammation in your body, helps regulate blood sugar levels, which reduces cravings.
  • Haritaki has a cleaning effect. It helps in your body’s natural detox process by eliminating harmful substances and accumulated fat cells.
  • Bibhitaki helps in digestion and detoxification, which indirectly reduces abdominal fat.

Many studies have shown that using Triphala helps in the reduction of body weight, BMI, and waist circumference. Improvements in cholesterol markers (total, LDL, triglycerides) and in some cases, fasting blood glucose were also seen. This suggests Triphala works on metabolic risk factors, which are key background drivers of weight management.

Kapha types (who gain weight easily) should definitely include this. Vata/Pitta types can also use it if taken correctly (right dose, right timing). Mix 3- 6 grams of Krishna’s Triphala powder in a glass of hot milk/warm water and drink in the morning & evening or as directed by your physician.

2. Guggul

Guggul is a resin obtained from the Commiphora mukul plant and has been used in Ayurveda for centuries to treat “medo roga” (fat-related disorders). What makes it unique is, Guggul naturally revs up metabolism, especially beneficial for Kapha-dominant individuals who typically have a slower metabolic rate.

Research suggests that compound guggulsterones present in Guggul gently stimulate thyroid function, and when thyroid hormones are active, metabolism speeds up and fat breakdown improves. A clinical trial showed that Guggul extract significantly reduced cholesterol and triglycerides, which are critical for metabolic health.

Take a teaspoonful of guggul extract twice daily.

3. Cinnamon (Dalchini)

This beloved spice that people add to chai is more than a flavor booster; it’s one of the best spices for weight loss. A 2019 study found that people who consumed at least 2 grams of cinnamon every day for 12 weeks experienced weight loss.

Cinnamon increases insulin sensitivity and can lower fasting blood glucose. When insulin functions well, your body begins to use stored fat for energy rather than adding new fat.

Add ½ tsp cinnamon powder to warm water, herbal tea, or oatmeal. Don’t overdo it (1 tsp per day is considered safe), and excessive amounts can trigger allergic reactions or digestive problems.

4. Ginger (Adrak)

This very popular herb that most Indians consume regularly is also a strong supporter of weight loss. In Ayurveda, ginger is known as a stimulant for the digestive fire (Agni), and when digestion is on point, fat breakdown happens more efficiently.

The phytochemicals in ginger prevent fat accumulation in your body and also increase your metabolic rate. Add fresh ginger to tea, soups, or detox water.

A popular Ayurvedic hack is to drink ginger-lemon-honey warm water on an empty stomach in the morning.

5. Kalonji (Nigella Seeds)

In Ayurveda, Kalonji, or black seeds (Nigella sativa), have always been at the top list of spices for digestion and metabolism, and modern science also supports their role in weight loss.

The active compound in Kalonji, thymoquinone, helps boost metabolism, stabilize blood sugar, and reduce chronic inflammation.

Take ½ teaspoon Kalonji seeds with warm water on an empty stomach in the morning, or mix them with honey. Kalonji oil is also available, but keep the dosage small (2.5–3 ml/day).

There are many other herbs and spices that Ayurveda advocates recommend for weight loss, such as Gurmer, Punarnava, Aloe vera, Vijayasar, Ajwain, and Pepper, but more research is needed to prove their role in weight loss.

Takeaway

These herbs and spices are definitely helpful for weight loss, but don’t rely on them alone. Without healthy eating, regular exercise, and proper sleep, they won’t deliver their best results. Ayurveda’s core principle is, balance everything for real, lasting results.
