Diabetes is a lifelong condition that requires regular monitoring of blood glucose levels to make sure they are stable. If you or your loved one is suffering from this chronic condition, opt for natural products like Krishna’s Diabic Care Juice. An Ayurvedic blend that not only aids in keeping your blood sugar levels within a target range but also helps prevent complications of diabetes, like heart disease.

The two main types of diabetes are type 1 and type 2, with Type 2 being the most common form, affecting nearly 537 million people worldwide. The staggering number is a matter of concern…but do you know what’s more worrisome?

Type 2 diabetes often develops gradually over the years, so many people might not even realize they have it until it’s well advanced. The first step to prevent the condition is to know its signs before it turns into a serious complication.

Let’s take a closer look at some of the first signs and symptoms of Type 2 diabetes.

1. Need to Urinate Frequently

If you are going to the bathroom more than usual, this could be a potential sign of Type 2 diabetes. When your blood sugar levels are too high, your kidneys are forced to work harder to flush out the excess sugar from your body.  This leads to frequent urination, also known as polyuria.

You might also notice that you need to get up every few hours during the night to urinate, and each time, the amount of urine may be excessive. This frequent nighttime urination is known as nocturia and is a common early sign of Type 2 diabetes.

2. Increased Thirst or a Dry Mouth

The increased production of urine to get rid of excess sugar from your blood can lead to a loss of extra water from your body. Over time, this can cause dehydration, making you feel unusually thirsty. Excessive thirst, or polydipsia, is another common symptom of Type 2 diabetes that often goes hand in hand with frequent urination.

Because of the loss of fluid, you may also suffer from dry mouth. This is your body’s way of telling you that you need to rehydrate constantly to keep up with the fluid loss.

3. Unexpected Weight Loss

Your body depends exclusively on sugar for its energy needs. But, in type 2 diabetes the sugar remains in the blood and does not reach your cells to turn into energy. As a result, your body is deprived of its largest energy source and hence starts burning muscle and fat instead.

Experiencing rapid weight loss without any effort can also be a warning sign of type 2 diabetes.

4. Increased Hunger

Feeling hungry even after having a full-fledged meal is another sign that your blood sugar levels are high. This feeling of persistent hunger is called polyphagia. Because of insulin resistance in type 2 diabetes, your body lacks sufficient energy and signals your brain for more food to get the energy it needs.

This is not the same as craving to eat something. Polyphagia involves having a bigger appetite than usual and a constant feeling to eat regardless of how recently you have eaten.

5. Lack of Energy or Fatigue

Your pancreas (an organ present behind the stomach) produces a hormone called insulin. This acts like a special key that unlocks cells to move glucose into them from blood circulation. In Type 2 diabetes, this lock-and-key mechanism does not work and despite having plenty of glucose in your bloodstream, it can’t enter the cells.

This makes you feel tired as your cells aren’t getting the fuel they need. Your energy levels are impacted, and you experience physical or mental exhaustion more often.

6. Blurry Vision

Due to a sudden rise in your blood sugar levels, the tiny blood vessels in your eyes might become damaged and lead to blurry vision. This can affect one or both of your eyes.

An excess of sugar can also make your eye lens and the tissue around it swell. Since they play a key role in your vision, the rapid changes in blood sugar make it harder for your eyes to focus. But there’s good news: once you return to healthy blood sugar levels, the swelling subsides, and your vision improves.

7. Sores That Heal Slowly

Another common symptom of Type 2 diabetes is the slow healing of cuts and wounds. The high blood sugar levels damage blood circulation and prevent oxygen and nutrients from getting to your wounds. As a result, it becomes harder for your body to heal wounds and cuts, which might take weeks or months. Slow wound healing also raises your chances of infection.

8. Skin Changes and Discolouration

Skin changes like soft patches of dark velvety skin especially on the folds of your neck, armpit, or groin might be a sign of type 2 diabetes.  This skin condition is called acanthosis nigricans which occurs due to insulin resistance in your body.

Another skin problem you might have is dry or itchy skin. The fluid pulled from cells throughout your body to produce urine to flush out excess glucose can lead to this.

9. Oral Health Problems

Declining oral health can also be a symptom of type 2 diabetes. Elevated blood sugar levels can affect your saliva in a couple of ways, which in turn can impact your teeth and gums.

First, you might have lower saliva secretion in your mouth. Saliva washes away debris and food from your teeth and gums. This helps prevent cavities and other infections in your mouth. With the reduced amount of saliva, you have less protection against cavity-causing bacteria. Saliva also contains minerals that protect your gums, so less saliva means less protection for your gums.

Second, if you have diabetes, your saliva may contain more glucose. This increased glucose can lead to plaque buildup, which can result in gingivitis (inflamed gums) periodontal disease (gums and bone loss). Mouth ulcers might also take longer to heal.
